Reading Room

Rise

                Testing winds blows
                      And shake lose the waste
                              And hindering forces
                                    Compelling us to let go
                                          That we may…
                                                               …Rise.

               When we feel life’s hurricanes
                     And take refuge
In the shadow of the Almighty
                                 We shall…
                                                               …Rise.

               When the storms rage with
Lighting flashes and the thunder rumbles
Fear not the roaring of a defeated foe
A newest of life is birthing
                                     And shall come forth
                                            And when we endure
                                                     We
                                      …Rise.

                Though the storm covers
The skies and floods the land in which we stand
Left with nothing from the work of our hands
We mount up to like eagles above the circumstances
                                              Through life’s storms
                                        We...
                                      …Rise.

Blessed Mama, Thankful Child

by Sharon D. Holliday

Mama I can't remember

When you held me for the first time

After I came from you womb.

Mama I can't remember

My first tooth,

Mama I can’t remember

When I took my first step

Or rode the tricycle for the first time

Mama I can't remember

My first word or the one that followed that

All I know is you were there

If I cried, fell, or just needed correction or hug.

Mama now that I am older

I remember the special things you did

While I was in my youth

Like that little red dress you bought

With your hard earned dollars

It was the dress I took my first school pictures in

You always made me look pretty

And my friend all thought I was rich.

Then thirty dollars was a lot of money

Not even mention earning a hundred in a week.

I remember no matter what we had it was always

Neat and clean.

Now mama I'm much older now

Lord I’m blessed to have you still

You still act like you did when I was a child.

You check to see if I’m well and you

Cover me with prayer each day.

I remember how you stayed with me when I was sick

And you weren’t doing so well those days.

I’ll never forget mama how you love me

And just imagine a greater love than that exists in God

Thank you for reminding me.

Mama you are blessed and I am a thankful child

One thing I want you to know

It’s my turn now,

So when you needed anything that’s why I am there

And when it seems out of the way

Or you just desire something

I’ll do what I know to see that you have it

Like you did for me

The way you did your best for me

I feel that way today

So mama, don’t ever think that doing something for you

Or just being there is a bother.

Remember it’s an honor

When I read Proverb 31,

 I say,

“Lord, as a woman of God that’s My Mama"

WHAT IS LOVE?

Love is a supernatural thing

A growing feeling which knows no bound

Springs from deep inside the heart

Encompassing the soul and mind

Love is patient

Trusting and caring

A feeling showing through a smile

Blind guided by faith

A passion that cannot be hidden

Love brings tears of joy

And tears of sadness

Pleasant pain

And painful pleasure

Breaks the heart

But also brings gladness too

True love is hard to detect

Being invisible

It’s hard to find

And once found is hard to keep

For its demands are hard to meet;

Loyalty, trust and honesty

Humanity, tolerance and fidelity

And a great many other forces

Internal and external

You can now ask yourself

Has it come your way?
